U.S. stocks end higher, but trim gains as energy rally fades

U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, but major indexes ended well off their highs as an early rally in energy stocks faded. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4% to 24,355. The S&P 500 gained 0.3% to 2,673. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.8% to 7,265. Both the S&P and the Nasdaq posted their second straight daily gain, while the Dow extended its winning streak to a third, including a rise of 0.02% on Thursday. Technology stocks were among the strongest of the day, with the sector up 0.8%. Among notable names, Microsoft Corp. rose 1.1% and Apple Inc. was up 0.7%. Energy stocks rose 0.2%, ending well below an early rally that took the industry up more than 2%. The sector’s rise faded after President Trump tweeted he would make an announcement on a possible decertification of the Iran nuclear agreement.
